What does Galatians 4:1-4 mean?!?
“Now I say, as long as the heir is a child, he does not differ at all from a slave although he is owner of everything, but he is under guardians and managers until the date set by the father. So also we, while we were children, were held in bondage under the elemental things of the world. heir through God.”
Galatians 4:1-4NASB1995
Back then when you were 0-14 you were considered under your father and mother. Once you were 14-30 you were considered an heir. The thing is an heir is very different than how we think it is or how we see it now. Heirs back then was considered an apprentice in the Roman culture. You couldn’t own a household or an estate until you were 30. But they didn’t want someone who didn’t know how to rule a household, to rule one especially if you were inheriting the things that once belong to your family. They wouldn’t want you to screw ur all up. . It would of led to messes and led people to fall. We go to high school around 14 (depending where you are from) there you begin to gain independence correct? You are now in practice for adulthood. Then some go to college and buy the time they get their masters or PhD and get the job in that career they are close to 30. So if your whole goal of life was to be a doctor, then you would go under that life way. Yet back then your life way or life path was to own an estate and to have and raise a family. So while you are an heir you had to do whatever your parents said in order to learn from them and in order for them to know you can handle life well. This is also why girls would be married off to men much older to them back them. I’m sure parents back then would of felt better back then if their son in law was close to their daughters age if that meant there daughter could have a good life. But they saw it as only older men were able to give their daughter a good life as only older men were no longer in rule of their parents and in rule of their estate. This is much difference than now as parents now have more opportunities and resources to provide for their kids, but back then , the best option was this.
