Iron Sharpens Iron
As Christians we are called to be good friends and help others who are hurting especially those who are close to us . We are called to sharpen eachother like the verse “As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.”
Proverbs 27:17 NLT
Let’s break the verse apart
Iron sharpens iron :
If you’ve ever been in a workshop or maybe you were just passing by someone cooking you might see them rubbing iron together in a form of a knife. They do this because when you rub them together they become sharper , making them more efficient to do their job. Rubbing them together also makes the knife shine and gets rid of it’s dullness. In the same way we are called to make eachother shine as well. Iron sharpens iron is not just a play on words it’s just basic truth .
So a friend sharpens a friend
A friend is supposed to “sharpen” one another just in the same way a knife does . A knife that does not get sharpen is still a knife don’t get me wrong , but it’s not a good knife . In the same way a friend is still a friend if they don’t sharpen you or make you better, but that doesn’t mean they are a good friend. A true friend is supposed to sharpen one another . Make them strong and help them perform their duty better as well just like iron knives do .
So as God calls us to be good friends, we should be like good knives , sharpening, enhancing, and making each other stronger . So don’t forget to check up on those who are hurting and those you call friends
