Aiming at the World

“So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it.”

‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭5:9‬ ‭NIV‬‬

A translation for goal in the sense is to aim. With that in mind, we can see it as to aim towards Him. The rest of the verse talks about aiming to do that in the body or without. So whether alive or dead on this earth we are to still please the Lord. The things of this earth will fade away, our bodies turned to dust, and our lives are forgotten in a few years. Yet, our soul will go on to live with Christ in His father’s house. So why do we make it an aim to live a worldly life, when these things will fade? Yet when we make our aim to live a life pleasing to God, the things we do will matter both here and in Heaven.

“I denied myself nothing my eyes desired; I refused my heart no pleasure. My heart took delight in all my labor, and this was the reward for all my toil. Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun.”

‭‭Ecclesiastes‬ ‭2:10-11‬ ‭NIV‬‬

People have lived a life chasing after all the things this earth has to offer, yet it all was in vain. The writer of Ecclesiastes counts it as “meaningless” and as “chasing after the wind.” So you can live a life like that, or you can chase after something that has meaning and that doesn’t fade away, the love of Christ.
